Riverdale Watch: 3.07 'The Man in Black'

I promised I'd start using Dreamwidth more, and what better way to do that than with a Riverdale liveblog!

First, a recap: I thought last week's episode, "Manhunter," was a bit of a mess compared to the tight, madcap prison break episode we just had. I didn't realize how frustrating it would be when they finally introduced supernatural elements. I want the Gargoyle King to make sense, but he's mostly just a jumpscare device now -- which doesn't even work because he never moves, just sort of looms. But apparently they were doing a Scream reference when he broke into Betty's house last week, so ... OK!

I'm super excited for the Archie/Jughead road trip. Less excited about Betty being with the Sisters of Quiet Mercy. We've done this plot four times, and it never goes anywhere! Hopefully it'll be a one and done thing, or it'll tie into the cult stuff. At least Archie's jailtime was new.

Now onto the show:

• Oh, it's the anthology episode! I always love these.
• "Archie, no offense, but Betty took down a serial killer last year. You can't go for five minutes without getting kidnapped or getting the crap kicked out of you." That's my show!
• Is this the Farm?
• "Biff and Cal" are delightfully 1930s serial names
• As someone who lives on a farm where we do "bale hay," this is not how it's done.
• 
• Is this woman gonna to take us step by step through why it's funny that their drugs are named Fizzle Rocks?
• That confirms that they're drugging the town with the stuff, though. Probably what's been giving people seizures.
• ARCHIE, YOU IGNORANT SLUT
• omg, me, when she's feeding him eggs: well, they're clearly drugged so--
• her: [FRYING PAN WHACK]
• i gasped
• ARCHIE: I can kill him.
• JUGHEAD: [so, so softly it breaks my heart] I know.
• Veronia/Reggie is so so so good, please let them explore this while Archie's off.
• REGGIE, THOSE PANTS. NO, MA'AM.
• 
• Veronica thinks "the house always wins" is just a law of the universe and not, like, something you have to actually work at.
• Just once I'd like someone who figures out an evil plan to not immediately go tell the bad guy that they know all about their evil plan.
• Reggie agrees.
• 
• [CACKLING] I LOVE HIS FACE
• the waaaaay reggie looks at her
• it is a crime against god that they haven't kissed yet. EVERYONE ELSE kisses like the second they're alone with anyone, why not them.
• "What do you see, Elizabeth?"
• "A butterfly. A Monarch butterfly."
• 
• OK, I really hate Ethel, but this? This is art.
• 
• She's in the monster self-ship fandom, I hate this.
• I loooooove Betty's inner monologue this episode: "This psycho bitch."
• "It's suuuuuper delicious."
• lmao Betty's "detective work" is literally banging on every door in the hallway with both hands, CHILD
• "We're gonna be a ship."
• "Aww? Ethelhead?"
• I'M GONNA THROW HANDS AT THIS SHOW WHAT ARE YOU DOING ODHFIHA:SFHA:F I LOVE
• I love Betty Cooper so much that I'm almost afraid the actual CW Nancy Drew show, if it gets made, won't live up to her, ha ha.
• That episode kicked ass, I love it.

Can't wait to see Jughead's family and I ship Betty/Gargoyle King because that's cool, and Reggie and Veronica should kiss, okay, have a good night.

I was leery at first because the first episode tried to throw me off-track with its floating demon babies, but it's great. (IT'S THE MIDNIGHT CLUB BUT NIGHTMARE CLUB SOUNDS BETTER AND IS MORE ACCURATE.) I binged S2 and I highly recommend that way of watching it, it helps some of the boring mob plots go quicker.
